The move marks a significant milestone for the brand's local operations and is expected to support the growth of South Africa's automotive supplier network as localisation efforts ramp up, the manufacturer states.
The announcement follows the Chery Group's acquisition of Nissan South Africa's Rosslyn plant earlier this year. Preparations are already underway to ready the facility for production, including infrastructure upgrades and programmes aimed at increasing the use of locally sourced components.
"Investing in local production is a decision about the kind of business we want Omoda & Jaecoo to become in South Africa," says Shannon Gahagan, Head of Brand and Marketing for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa.
"The C4 will give us a place in the country's manufacturing industry, while its petrol, hybrid and fully electric range will give our customers greater choice when buying an Omoda," Shannon adds.
The C4 is expected to play an important role in the brand's local line-up by offering a choice of internal combustion, hybrid and battery-electric powertrains. The broad range is intended to cater for differing customer requirements, whether buyers are seeking a conventional petrol-powered vehicle, improved efficiency from a hybrid system or a fully electric driving experience.
Stylistically, the newcomer adopts Omoda's latest Cyber Mecha design language, characterised by sharp body lines, angular styling details and a distinctive lighting signature. Originally revealed as the C3, the model has since evolved into the C4 and targets younger buyers through a combination of futuristic styling and advanced digital technology.
Inside, the cabin continues the modern theme with a driver-focused layout designed around connectivity and convenience. Internationally showcased features include a 13.2-inch central infotainment display, a 540-degree panoramic camera system and 50W wireless charging capability.
The introduction of local production represents more than just the arrival of a new model. It also signals a deeper commitment to South Africa as the brand seeks to establish a stronger long-term presence in the market while contributing to domestic manufacturing and supplier development.
Further details regarding South African specifications, pricing and launch timing will be announced closer to the C4's local introduction.
