What is it?
The Punch is Tata's entrant in the compact SUV segment and has become one of the brand's most successful products globally, attracting more than 800 000 buyers in its home market of India. Positioned as an affordable SUV offering, the newcomer sits below larger family-oriented models in the range while combining compact dimensions with elevated ground clearance and SUV-inspired styling.
In South Africa, buyers can choose between the Pure+, Adventure and range-topping Accomplished+ S derivatives, each adding additional convenience and technology features as you move up the range.
Powertrains:
Under the bonnet, the Pure+ and Adventure derivatives are powered by a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 65 kW and 115 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission, while Tata claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.5 l/100 km.
The flagship Accomplished+ S introduces a turbocharged version of the same 1.2-litre engine. Outputs increase to 88 kW and 170 Nm, while a six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard. The turbocharged derivative records a claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 6.1 l/100 km and gains a dedicated Sport drive mode.
Exterior:
The latest Punch adopts a more modern SUV appearance with LED headlamps, LED daytime running lights and a redesigned front grille. Depending on derivative, customers can also expect LED fog lamps, roof rails, a contrasting roof finish and 16-inch Trailcrest alloy-wheels. At the rear, connected Infinity Glow LED taillamps create a more contemporary look, while the 193 mm ground clearance helps reinforce the vehicle's crossover credentials.
Interior:
Inside, the Punch features a dual-tone cabin design and a digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are fitted across the range, paired with either an 8-inch or 10.25-inch Harman infotainment system depending on derivative. Other available features include wireless smartphone charging, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, push-button start and a voice-assisted electric sunroof. Rear air vents and USB-C charging ports further contribute to everyday comfort and practicality.
Safety:
Safety equipment includes six airbags as standard across all derivatives, together with electronic stability control, Hill Hold Assist, Hill Descent Control, tyre pressure monitoring and ISOFIX child-seat anchorages. Adventure and Accomplished+ S models additionally gain a 360-degree camera system and Blind View Monitor, while the Punch carries a five-star Bharat NCAP safety rating.
Price and warranty:
The Tata Punch Pure+ 1.2L 5MT (R224 900), Tata Punch Adventure 1.2L 5MT (R244 900) and Tata Punch Accomplished+ S 1.2 Turbo 6MT (R269 900) are all backed by a five-year/125 000 km warranty and a two-year/30 000 km service plan.
