UD Trucks broadens component replacement options for operators

Managing repair costs and minimising downtime remain key priorities for fleet operators, particularly when major truck components require replacement.

Service Exchange

In response, UD Trucks Southern Africa has introduced a new Service Exchange programme that provides customers with an alternative to purchasing certain new replacement components.

The programme forms part of the company's aftermarket offering and is designed to give operators greater flexibility when making maintenance and repair decisions. Rather than automatically replacing an engine, gearbox or injector with a new unit, customers can exchange eligible worn or damaged components for professionally restored replacements.

At launch, the programme covers engines, gearboxes and injectors, although UD Trucks plans to expand the range to include additional components such as cylinder heads, starters, alternators, turbochargers and retarders.

For commercial vehicle operators, major component failures can affect more than workshop schedules. Repair decisions often influence vehicle availability, maintenance budgets and operational productivity. The Service Exchange programme introduces another option between repairing an existing component and investing in a new replacement.

The process begins with an assessment by a UD Trucks dealer to determine whether an exchange component is available and suitable for the vehicle in question. If the component qualifies, the worn unit, referred to as the core, is returned according to programme requirements and can potentially be restored for future use.

By creating an additional pathway for component replacement, the programme aims to support customers facing different operational circumstances and maintenance requirements. Depending on component availability and the nature of the repair, exchange units may help reduce the time vehicles spend off the road while providing another option for managing maintenance expenditure.

The introduction of the programme also expands the role of the dealer network during the repair process. Service advisors and workshop teams can discuss a broader range of replacement solutions with customers, taking factors such as vehicle application, operating requirements and component eligibility into account when evaluating available options.

Beyond the commercial aspects, the Service Exchange programme supports a more circular approach to component management. Instead of every replacement requiring a newly manufactured part, suitable returned components can be recovered, restored and reintroduced into service. This extends the useful life of selected parts and creates additional replacement options within the aftermarket network.

Exchange components supplied through the programme are backed by a one-year warranty, subject to applicable terms and conditions. Customers seeking information on availability, component eligibility, warranty coverage and core-return requirements can obtain further details through their nearest UD Trucks dealer.
