The Nissan X-Trail has been a familiar name in South Africa since its introduction in 2001, with more than 50 000 units sold locally and over 8 million worldwide.
The latest generation marks a significant step forward, offering more refinement, advanced technology and improved comfort, says Nissan. It arrives at competitive prices, making it one of the most accessible mid-size SUVs in its class.
What is it?
The new Nissan X-Trail, build in Japan, is a mid-size SUV and available in three grades, Visia, Acenta and Acenta Plus, and is positioned as a versatile family vehicle with strong safety credentials and modern features.
Interior:
The cabin has been upgraded with a focus on comfort and technology. Standard features across the range include keyless access with Nissan’s Walkaway Lock and Approach Unlock, tilt and telescopic steering adjustment, paddle shifts, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity and a 12.3‑inch infotainment display.
Acenta and Acenta Plus models add dual zone climate control, powered front seats with heating and a full digital instrument cluster. The Acenta Plus further benefits from a digital Head Up Display. Seating flexibility is a highlight, with the second row able to slide, fold and recline, while the Acenta Plus introduces a third row that can also fold flat or recline. A major addition is the 8‑camera 3D Around View Monitor, offering multiple angles, Invisible Hood View and T‑Junction View for improved visibility in tight or complex environments.
Exterior:
The refreshed design gives the X-Trail a stronger road presence. A new front grille and bumper with horizontal lines create a wider stance, complemented by polycarbonate door inserts and diamond cut alloy wheels ranging from 17‑inch on the Visia to 19‑inch on the Acenta Plus.
The two-tier light design incorporates LED daytime running lights above and LED driving lights below, with all models fitted with LED front and rear clusters. High Beam Assist and Follow Me Home lighting are standard. At the rear, redesigned LED light clusters complete the modernised look.
Powertrain:
All models are powered by a 2.5‑litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 135kW and 244Nm of torque. Power is delivered through a new-generation continuously variable transmission with natural-feeling shifts, supported by a limited slip differential.
According to Nissan, fuel consumption is rated at 7.4 litres per 100km, giving a range of around 750 km from the 55‑litre tank. Drive Mode selectors allow ECO, NORMAL and SPORT settings, while the Acenta Plus adds Terrain Mode with options for mud, snow and sand.
Price, models and warranty: Visia (R599 900), Acenta (R688 900) and Acenta Plus (R770 900). All models include a 3‑year/90 000 km-service plan and a 6‑year/150 000 km-mechanical warranty.
