Mitsubishi has added another option to the crowded family SUV space with the new Destinator, a seven-seater designed with emerging markets in mind.
It leans heavily on practicality and space, while trying to blend SUV presence with MPV usability. The result is a product that targets buyers who want flexibility without stretching into premium territory.
What is it?
The Destinator fits into the mid-size SUV segment, but it sits slightly differently to traditional rivals. It combines the upright stance and ground clearance of an SUV with the interior packaging of an MPV. That means three rows of seating and a strong focus on everyday usability. In Mitsubishi’s local line up, it effectively bridges the gap between the smaller Xpander and the more expensive Outlander, giving buyers a relatively affordable seven seat option.
Exterior:
The design follows Mitsubishi’s familiar themes, with a bold front end built around the latest version of the Dynamic Shield grille. The look is clean and modern, with T shaped LED lighting elements front and rear giving it a wide stance. There is some visual muscle in the fenders, while 18-inch alloy wheels add to the SUV feel. Around the back, the styling is simple, with wraparound taillights and a large tailgate emphasising practicality over flair.
Interior:
Inside, the focus is clearly on space and flexibility. There are three rows of seating, with the second and third rows folding in multiple configurations to balance passengers and luggage. Mitsubishi has also added many storage areas, which makes a difference in daily use. The dashboard is dominated by a wide digital display setup on higher spec models, while the overall layout is straightforward and easy to use.
Equipment:
Specification is generous, particularly on the higher grade Exceed model. Features such as a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, dual zone climate control and a powered tailgate are included. There is also a strong focus on safety, with driver assistance systems like blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and a surround view camera available. Lower spec models still cover the basics well, including a touchscreen infotainment system and parking aids.
Engine:
Power comes from a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 120kW and 250Nm. It is paired with a CVT gearbox driving the front wheels. The setup prioritises smoothness and efficiency rather than outright performance. Drive modes on the Exceed model adjust responses for different surfaces, which adds a layer of versatility.
Model differences:
The GLS serves as the entry point, offering cloth seats, a smaller infotainment screen, a rear-view camera and fewer driver assistance features. The Exceed builds on this with a larger display, leather trim, additional safety systems, a panoramic sunroof and more convenience features. The overall mechanical package remains the same, so the difference is mainly in comfort and technology.
Prices:
Pricing starts at R489 990 for the GLS and rises to R569 990 for the Exceed. The Destinator is sold with a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and a five year or 75 000 km service plan, with service intervals set at 15 000 km or 12 months.
