Positioned as a practical family vehicle, the BEV offers motorists an alternative route into electric mobility while retaining the familiar proportions and design language of the J5 series. The J5 line-up now comprises petrol, hybrid and fully electric models, offering South African buyers a choice across powertrains.
Powertrain:
The J5 BEV is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 155kW and 288Nm of torque to the front wheels. Two driving modes, Eco and Sport, allow adjustment to different conditions.
Energy is supplied by a 58.9kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, providing a claimed WLTP range of 402 km. Charging options include 11kW AC and DC fast charging up to 130kW, enabling a 30–80% recharge in around 28 minutes. Vehicle-to-load functionality adds versatility by allowing the battery to power external devices.
Exterior:
While recognisable as part of the J5 family, the BEV introduces distinct styling cues. The traditional waterfall grille is replaced by a streamlined fascia with a full-width lightbar. Standard exterior equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic moonroof, LED headlights and daytime running lights, acoustic glass, roof rails and a power-operated tailgate.
These refinements give the BEV a unique identity while maintaining the clean proportions of the wider J5 range.
Interior:
The cabin offers black or white trim options, with electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats. Multi-colour ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, rear air vents and a power-operated sunshade enhance comfort.
Technology features include an eight-inch digital driver display, a 13.2-inch central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, voice-command functionality and Carlinko app control. Practicality is supported by a 480-litre luggage compartment, expandable to 1 284 litres with the rear seats folded.
Price and warranty:
The J5 BEV is priced from R549 900. Customers who pre-order before the official launch in August 2026 will receive an incentive package valued at over R50 000, including a R12 000 discount, R5 000 in public charging credit and an EV Starter Kit with a home wallbox charger and accessories.
